Cletus' First Collegiate Dictionary of Japanese Chin Music

Christmas in Japan

The yuletide spirit often manifests itself in odd ways in Japan. At Christmas time, the kfc outlets cloak Colonel Sanders in a Santa suit. A well known department store once featured an enormous banner for the holidays that read, “SUCCESS CHRISTMAS!” And in another department store in the late eighties, our Chin Music correspondent was surprised to find among the ornaments a jolly, smiling Santa ... hanging on a cross. This odd blend of the mythical and religious struck him as intriguing. Regrettably, he has yet to find an ornament in the shape of a reindeer-powered sleigh driven by Jesus in a loincloth.
