Gustav may be the first major hurricane to enter the Gulf of Mexico since 2005, according to reports on WWL radio:

Officials say since it has been three years since a major storm threatened coastal residents along the Gulf, people need to make sure they are prepared and pay attention as we get closer to the long holiday weekend.

"The last major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico would have been Wilma in 2005," says Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen at the National Hurricane Center.

He adds, "The cone of uncertainty runs from the southwest coast of Florida through the northern half of the Yucatan Peninsula, to just off shore of Southern Louisiana." So, he says everyone along the Gulf Coast needs to have a hurricane plan ready to go.

About this blog

After Katrina and its horrible aftermath, Chin Music Press felt compelled to shine its wobbly flashlight on New Orleans. This effort resulted in our second book, Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? Along the way, we met a community of passionate, eloquent writers who care deeply about what happens to the Big Easy. This blog became a natural extension of the book. It's our way of adding voices to the unfolding story of New Orleans.
