Voices of New Orleans

“ In books and official reports, the tragedy of Katrina was blamed on politicians, poverty and poor engineering, as it should have been. But there was another conversation that should have happened — not about blame, but about understanding. What did regular people do before, during and after the storm? Why? And what could they have done better?” — Amanda Ripley in her book, The Unthinkable

Both the films reviewed in this article sound very interesting. They're from the New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival, but let's hope they get a wider release. Here's a snippet from one of the reviews:

From the Mouthpiece on Back, screening April 13 at Zeitgeist, is terrific, and the closet thing to a feel good Katrina movie I’ve seen. True, it’s a documentary, and yes, we see the same type of depressing storm imagery we see in all Katrina documentaries, footage taken during the storm, shots of the city filled with water, a decimated Lower 9th Ward, but the mood somehow stays lifted by the film’s heroes, the guys from To Be Continued Brass Band . These guys are charming as hell, every last one of them. They’re funny, talented, young, witty, attractive, and, at least on film, they take everything that’s thrown at them with unimaginable spirit and focus. Full of terrific moments, the film itself is quite focused. From the get-go you understand completely what you’re rooting for.

About this blog

After Katrina and its horrible aftermath, Chin Music Press felt compelled to shine its wobbly flashlight on New Orleans. This effort resulted in our second book, Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? Along the way, we met a community of passionate, eloquent writers who care deeply about what happens to the Big Easy. This blog became a natural extension of the book. It's our way of adding voices to the unfolding story of New Orleans.
