Voices of New Orleans

“ In books and official reports, the tragedy of Katrina was blamed on politicians, poverty and poor engineering, as it should have been. But there was another conversation that should have happened — not about blame, but about understanding. What did regular people do before, during and after the storm? Why? And what could they have done better?” — Amanda Ripley in her book, The Unthinkable

This has to be the coolest music tour ever:

The piano on which John Lennon composed his hit song "Imagine" in 1971 has been brought to New Orleans for a photograph session that the piano's new owner hopes will bring awareness to the hurricane-stricken city.

The piano will be photographed at two locations _ the lobby of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, which was built sometime before 1772 and is rumored to have been the base of operations for the pirate Jean Lafitte in New Orleans.

The piano, owned by musician George Michael, will be photographed by Kenny Goss, the owner of Goss Gallery in Dallas. The piano's stop in New Orleans is part of a worldwide tour of sites where acts of violence have taken place and locations that capture the human spirit.

They are making a documentary and book on the project - all proceeds to go to charity.

About this blog

After Katrina and its horrible aftermath, Chin Music Press felt compelled to shine its wobbly flashlight on New Orleans. This effort resulted in our second book, Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? Along the way, we met a community of passionate, eloquent writers who care deeply about what happens to the Big Easy. This blog became a natural extension of the book. It's our way of adding voices to the unfolding story of New Orleans.
