Voices of New Orleans

"It is has been three weeks since Hurricane Ike blew ashore on Galveston Island bringing up to 20 feet of Gulf waters over the low-lying land, killing a still yet to be determined number of residents — several hundred remain missing — and inflicting billions of dollars in damage. The television satellite trucks and cable news stars are gone and the nation's collective eye has turned elsewhere. But thousands of area residents now live in a stench-filled world where the incongruous is normal and the dangerous real." — from a Time magazine report on life after Ike

Gifts not found at a mall near you

December 14, 2007

Fleur+de+Green.jpgLast-minute shoppers, you still have time to get something special for friends and family and also help a good cause. The cool green Tee featured here is offered by the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund, They have many more stylish offerings at the NOMRF store. Gifts like these are wayyyy better than another sweater from the mall.

Also, remember that Chin Music Press is donating $5 to KARES for every copy of Do You Know ... and Last of the Red Hot Poppas ordered over our online store. KARES is a support group for displaced writers from New Orleans that has been operating since soon after the levees broke. This offer extends until Fat Tuesday.

So if you're going to shop anyway — and you know you are — why not support a good cause like NOMRF or KARES this holiday season.

About this blog

After Katrina and its horrible aftermath, Chin Music Press felt compelled to shine its wobbly flashlight on New Orleans. This effort resulted in our second book, Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? Along the way, we met a community of passionate, eloquent writers who care deeply about what happens to the Big Easy. This blog became a natural extension of the book. It's our way of adding voices to the unfolding story of New Orleans.
