Jennifer Shaw's "Hurricane Story" Now Available for Preorder; Free Shipping and Chance to Win Free Print for Those Who Order by July 4

Jennifer Shaw

Photographer Jennifer Shaw was nearly due to give birth to her first child when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. She and her husband Cesar left for southern Alabama the day before landfall. But her baby couldn’t wait, and so the same day the levees broke, they made a mad dash – sometimes at 90mph speeds and sometimes with police escort – to deliver the child at a hospital in Athens, AL.

That story appeared on a northern Alabama TV news program (read the transcript).

Jennifer recorded her escape and subsequent journey across 11 states and back to New Orleans in a series of 46 photographs, taken with an inexpensive plastic Holga camera. And on July 1, Chin Music Press, through its Broken Levee Books imprint, will release the photos in Hurricane Story, along with captions written in simple, understated prose.

Former New York Times columnist Rob Walker has written the introduction.

Books will begin hitting store shelves in July. But we are now accepting preorders. And for those who place an order by the end of the July 4 weekend, we are offering free shipping to any destination in North America, as well as the chance to win a signed, numbered, limited edition 17" x 17" print of one of the photographs from the book, a $500 value. It’s an image of an Appaloosa horse at Jennifer’s mother’s farm in Delaware.

So order your copy at the Chin Music Press store!
