The third edition of Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans? features a downpour of question marks on the new cover designed by Josh Powell. Underneath the jacket, printed on the actual cover and back cover of the book, is a colorful Mardi Gras scene from 190?. The last number in the year is mysteriously cut off.
Between the covers, the book is exactly the same as it was in February 2006, when we unveiled it at the Saturn Bar in NOLA's Ninth Ward. We didn't add an obtuse, wordy foreword from the city's favorite public radio contributor or a bland few paragraphs from some celebrity praising the city's spirit. We just kept it in its imperfect, breathless form to remind people of what it was like to be from New Orleans in the fall of 2005.
The book was rushed to press in 90 days because we feared New Orleans would be gone forever. We structured the book like a jazz funeral because the contributors -- living on friends' couches or out of motels -- wrote with a sense of existential dread. No one was sure in September and October 2005 just what would become of New Orleans. Rereading this anthology, I think it reminds us what it was like to love New Orleans during that uncertain time.
As many of you know, we followed this book with another anthology in 2011, Where We Know: New Orleans as Home. And we plan to complete the trilogy in 2016.
